4 important truths about affiliate marketing in Nigeria

Posted on July 25, 2021September 21, 2021 By damlek No Comments on 4 important truths about affiliate marketing in Nigeria

Making extra cash in an extremely fast way is everyone’s dream. And thanks to the internet, there are tons of ways for you to earn a living doing affiliate marketing in Nigeria, while sipping a drink on your bed.

In as much as motivational speakers make it seem like working 24/7 is the only way to success, the truth is, working hard doesn’t guarantee success but working smart does – Affiliate marketing is one of the smart ways to earn a living in Nigeria.

Personally, I’ve had a handful of experience working online. I’ve hopped in and out of various online jobs, and believe me when I say affiliate marketing is one of the best out there.

Although affiliate marketing is a quick way to make money, it requires perseverance and effort on your part.

Affiliate marketing is a popular topic on everyone’s lips but as you know, no one takes their time to sit you through all there is to know about it.

As one with abundant knowledge of the affiliate marketing space and who understands your desire to “make it quick”, I’ll give you a heads up.

To save you the stress of reading countless posts on Affiliate Marketing here is all you need to know about affiliate marketing in Nigeria.

What is affiliate marketing?

It’s just another big word believe me. It’s a grand term given to something that even a six-year-old boy/girl does regularly. To make it clear, it’s all about directing and promoting other people’s business but in this case, you’ll get to earn a reward each time a customer patronizes the business promoted by you.

Well, does it work in Nigeria?

Of course! Why not? Affiliate marketing is a legitimate way to earn money in Nigeria. However, there are lots of affiliate marketing scams out there waiting for newbies like you to fall prey to.

I have an eye for pyramid schemes when I see them and hopefully, you’ll have one after a comprehensive read-through of this blog post.

How does it work?

To become an affiliate marketer, you need to align yourself with companies that offer affiliate marketing programs. Find companies that are ready to reward you for directing customers to their businesses.

Online affiliate marketing makes it relatively easy for you to find both companies that offer affiliate marketing programs and consumers as well.

Not to leave you confused, an online affiliate marketing program is a company’s program you sign up for. After signing up, you’ll be provided with promotional materials and links. When a consumer clicks on the link provided to you and makes a purchase, you’ll earn a commission.

As a marketer, all you’ll need to do is promote these links to a large audience through your blog, social media pages, and online advertising.

How do you succeed in affiliate marketing?

Sound easy, right? It is! But there is a bit of procedure involved in it. Before you find success in affiliate marketing, you’ll need to have a bit of a relationship with sellers/companies and consumers. A seller is the affiliate link provider. They offer a commission to you according to your contract with them. The contract a company offers may differ.

Nigerian company like Jumia offers affiliate marketing programs and when you become an affiliate with them, there are certain conditions you’ll be subjected to.

When a consumer clicks on the link assigned to you by Jumia, you’ll only get paid when that consumer purchases within the next 7 days because Jumia Nigeria operates on a ‘pay-per-sale’ rule.

Other Nigerian affiliate programs like Konga aka Yuboss program only pay their affiliate marketers when a consumer clicks and makes a purchase within 14 days. Amazon’s cookie link lasts 24 hours while Shopify Nigeria lasts for 30 days.

When choosing a company to affiliate with, it’s wise that you understand their terms and conditions. Building a relationship with your customers is also advisable.

If your customer clicks on your affiliate link without purchasing a product within the time stipulated by the company, you won’t get paid. So, for example, you are an Amazon affiliate marketer, and you are promoting one of the latest items in store.

If a consumer clicks on your link but doesn’t make a purchase within the next 24 hours, you’ll receive no commission even if they make a purchase after 24 hours.

How much can you make money from Affiliate Marketing in Nigeria?

As earlier mentioned, the commission you receive is dependant on the terms and conditions of the company as well as the products you market.

So, the amount you receive as income depends solely on your skills as a marketer and your effort. Some companies reward on a pay-per-click or pay-per-sale standard but this payment standard holds no value when you as an affiliate marketer is without a large audience.

How to be a successful affiliate marketer in Nigeria

I’m not one who gives people fish without teaching them how to fish. Since you’re familiar with how affiliate marketing works in Nigeria, I’ll give you a rundown on how to succeed as an affiliate marketer.

  • Build an online platform:- An online affiliate marketer needs a platform where consumers can acquire information about a product or service. This platform will enable you to build credibility for yourself and that of the company you affiliate for.
  • Sign up for an affiliate program:- There are lots of brands looking to expand their business through affiliate marketers. It’s up to you to sign up with them. Be careful though as they are lots of pyramid schemes out there posing as affiliate marketing programs. Don’t fall prey to them and don’t be scared. Companies that scam affiliate marketers are identifiable with these 3 dominant traits; they offer an unreasonable high reward to affiliate marketers, they ask for a certain amount for sign-ups, and their products are usually without sufficient online information. Do your research about a company before signing up as an affiliate marketer.
  • Build and engage your visitors:- Consumers are what drives you to the path of a successful affiliate marketer. Gather an audience on a platform and engage them to keep them coming back to you. Engage them on online platforms like blogs, your social media page, YouTube videos, TikTok, etc. Convince them not to only click on the link, but to also purchase from your link within the company’s timeframe because that’s one of the ways you get paid.

Truth is, there’s no difference between the affiliate programs in Nigeria and the ones abroad. Your concern should centre around finding and promoting a product that is relevant to the Nigerian audience and market.

To get you ready to become an affiliate marketer, here are some credible Nigerian companies offering affiliate programs:- Jumia affiliate program, DomainRacer Web Hosting Affiliate Program, YuBoss Konga affiliate program, Payoneer affiliate program, Web4Africa affiliate program, WhoGoHost affiliate program, WakaNow affiliate program, TravelStart affiliate program, Bet9ja affiliate program, PayPorte affiliate program, and Vconnect affiliate program.

Wishing you all the best as an affiliate marketer!
